Products such as cotton swabs and straws, forks, knives, spoons and chopsticks, plates, drink stirrers will no longer be sold.
Amazon will stop selling single-use plastic items, such as drinking straws, cotton swabs, plates, cutlery and cups of this material starting this Monday in its virtual stores in the European Union, the United Kingdom and Turkey.
Specifically, last October the e-commerce giant sent a communication to its sellers, informing them that as of that date this new multinational policy came into force to comply with European regulations aimed at avoiding plastic waste.
the multinational thus ahead of the date set by the European directive 2019/904, which sets July 2021 as the day for member states to implement policies aimed at limiting the sale of these products to promote the transition to a circular economy.
In this way, this policy will prohibit the sale of certain single-use (disposable) plastic products and made with oxo-degradable plastic in virtual stores from Amazon UK, European Union and Turkey.
Thus, as of today, single-use plastic products such as cotton swabs and straws (except in the case of health or medical products), forks, knives, spoons and chopsticks, plates, drink stirrers will not be sold on the ‘marketplace’ , sticks that are placed and support balloons, among others.
Nor will they be available in the virtual stores of the platform food containers made of expanded polystyrene, such as boxes, with or without lids, used to contain food that is intended for immediate consumption, on the spot or to take away. As well as beverage containers made from expanded polystyrene, including caps and lids, and products made from oxo-degradable plastics.
Amazon told its vendors that those who had some type of these products stored in one of its logistics centers could sell the inventory until this Sunday or request that it be sent to the location of their choice at no cost, since the company will not charge any fee for the removal of inventory .
