December closes as the month with the most expensive price of electricity, with almost 240 euros / MWh.
The average price of electricity in the wholesale market this Friday a 29.8% compared to Thursday, thus cutting with the series of three chain rises of the last days and reaching the level of the 140 euros per megawatt hour (MW).
Specifically, the ‘pool’ will mark for this Friday an average of 140.82 euros / MWh, in front of 200.68 euros / MWh today, and will close December registering the fifth lowest level so far this month, according to provisional data published by the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE) –
Despite this significant decrease, the cost of electricity in the wholesale market continues to skyrocket when compared to the records of the same day of the previous year, when the price stood at 48.66 euros / MWh. The increase on this Friday compared to December 31, 2020 is 189% more.
By time slots, The maximum price of electricity for this Friday will be between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., with 193.15 euros / MWh, while the minimum, of 111.1 euros / MWh, will be registered between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
The rise in prices in the electricity market in recent months is mainly explained by high gas prices in the markets and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission rights, at record highs this year.
